RESUMO

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG), which utilize contact electrification of two different material surfaces accompanied by electrical induction has been proposed and is considered as a promising energy harvester. Researchers have attempted to form desired structures on TENG surfaces and successfully demonstrated the advantageous effect of surface topography on its electrical output performance. In this study, we first propose the structured Al (SA)-assisted TENG (SA-TENG), where one of the contact layers of the TENG is composed of a structured metal surface formed by a metal-to-metal (M2M) imprinting process. The fabricated SA-TENG generates more than 200 V of open-circuit voltage and 60 µA of short-circuit current through a simple finger tapping motion. Given that the utilization of the M2M imprinting process allows for the rapid, versatile and easily accessible structuring of various metal surfaces, which can be directly used as a contact layer of the TENG to substantially enhance its electrical output performance, the present study may considerably broaden the applicability of the TENG in terms of its fabrication standpoint.

4-Aminobenzenethiol (4-ABT) is an unusual molecule in the sense that several distinct peaks whose counterparts are rarely found in the normal Raman spectrum are observed in its surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra. Their origin has been argued over recently as due to either a metal-to-adsorbate charge transfer or the formation of a photoreaction product such as dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB). In an electrochemical SERS measurement, the intensities of the new peaks depended strongly not only on the excitation wavelength but also on the electrode potential. Interestingly, we observed a similar spectral variation even under ambient conditions by exposure of 4-ABT on Ag to volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) such as acetone and ammonia. Since acetone and ammonia barely react directly with 4-ABT, the effect of VOCs must be indirect, presumably associated with the movement of electrons between VOCs and the Ag substrate causing either an increase or a decrease in the surface potential of Ag. Based on the potential-dependent SERS data, the effect of acetone therefore appeared to correspond to an application of +0.15 V to the Ag substrate vs. a saturated Ag/AgCl electrode, while the effect of ammonia corresponded to the application of -0.45 V to Ag. We admit that much the same VOC effect could be observable if a photoproduct was formed immediately upon irradiation and the product was also subjected to a chemical enhancement mechanism. The Gaussian response of the peak intensities of the b(2)-type bands to applied potential, as well as to VOCs, dictated that the new peaks appearing in the SERS of 4-ABT have nothing to do with any electrochemical reaction. In addition, a separate preliminary work suggested that the b(2)-type bands are not at least due to a photoreaction product such as DMAB.

Recovery from hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection depends on the cellular immune responses. Chemokines and their receptors play significant roles in immune defense. This study was undertaken to investigate the association between HBV infection and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of genes for the chemokines and their receptors. Between March 2002 and February 2004, a total of 957 single ethnic Korean patients were enrolled into two different groups; "HBV clearance group" (n=350), who have recovered from HBV infection, and "HBV persistence group" (n=607), who were repeatedly HBsAg-positive. The HBV persistence group was subdivided into "inactive carrier" and "HBV progression group (chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis)". We assessed polymorphisms in regulated and normal T-cell expressed and secreted (RANTES) at position -403, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) at position -2518, CCR2 V64I, CCR5 -2459, CXCR1 S276T and CXCR4 I138I using single primer extension assay. Genotype distributions of the "HBV clearance versus persistence group" and "inactive carrier versus HBV progression group" were compared. On the basis of unconditional logistic regression analysis with adjustment for age and sex, no statistically significant association with susceptibility to persistent HBV infection was observed with RANTES -403, MCP-1 -2518, CCR2 V64I, CCR5 -2459, CXCR1 S276T, and CXCR4 I138I polymorphisms. In addition, no association of analyzed SNPs with HBV disease progression was found.

Recently, gastric Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) colonization has been shown to affect the expression of leptin and ghrelin, hormones that control appetite and satiety. Gastric leptin, produced by chief and parietal cells and released in response to meals, may play a role in weight gain after eradication of H. pylori infection, whereas ghrelin, produced by X/A-like enteroendocrine cells in oxyntic gland, is released during fasting, and suppressed by feeding and leptin. Whether either that H. pylori genes represent microbial contributions to the complement of thrifty genes of humans, or that H. pylori disappearance plays a role in adiposity remains to be determined. Simply, ghrelin-leptin might tango in body weight regulation, gastric inflammation, and gastric motility. In the current review about the possible role of ghrelin in gastric inflammation, we found that high serum albumin condition decreased ghrelin expression, whereas serum albumin deprivation significantly increased ghrelin expression, however, of which regulation was abolished after H. pylori infection. Ghrelin significantly attenuated the inflammatory stimuli imposed after H. pylori, shown with inactivation of phospho-extracellular signal-regulated kinase (p-ERK) and nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB)-DNA binding activities. Conclusively, besides orexigenic and weight gaining actions of gastric hormone, ghrelin, it likely endows the stomach the protective effect from exogenous damages.
